Here I have a RARE , stunning , beautiful 72cm section of Natural fossilized tusk either from Stegodon, (one of the largest species of elephant that ever lived) or the famous Mammoth. This Piece has great colour and texture Amazing fossil to display and far rarer than the ones from Siberia It also comes with the custom made Solid wood Mahogany stand with plaque! Discovered on the island of Java Indonesia. 24cm long and approx 3kg stunning colours and Texture.

Stegodon was present in Indonesia from 11.6 million years ago till around 5,000 years ago, this fossil is likely to be over 1 million yeras old. Find me on my fb page by searching "the workshop Brading" for more info photos.

Stegodons probably originated from Gomphothierium, and developed into a new direction with increase molar size and ridge-like dental features. The tusks were so close together that the trunk probably did not lye between them but instead draped over. Stegodon moved into Africa in the Pliocene and is regarded as the ancestor to present day elephants, as well as the extinct mammoths. The oldest finds of Stegodon are found in Asia and are dated to about 10 millions years (Late Miocene) but may have persisted to as recently as 15,000 years ago. Stegodon diet consists of branches and foliage of trees.
