FRENCH Pyrenees NATURAL SHARPENING STONE, LARGE SIZE BIG BLOCK 7.2 lbs RARE

FRENCH Pyrenees NATURAL SHARPENING STONE, LARGE SIZE BIG BLOCK. French natural sharpening stone from the Pyrenees, uniform fine grain, semi-hard, sandstone shale, in original box, approx. One of the largest blocks ever produced, weight 3.3 Kg. It is at the foot of the Ariège Pyrenees, in the Saurat valley, that the last factory of natural sharpening stones is located.

Founded in the early 1900s by the Cuminetti family, this operation was taken over in 2006 by Alain Soucille de THIERS, known until then for his abrasive and polishing products company. The exploitation of this shale sandstone, whose fineness of the grain and mineralogical purity allow rational and perfect sharpening, gives rise to a complete range of tools. Marketed throughout Europe in the early 1900s, there are publications in the 1906 sales catalogs in France. Extracted in an open pit, it is also called soft stone.

It is a much more homogeneous stone, dark gray in color. It will be used for finer and more precise sharpening. Semi-hard stone can be polished on one or more sides which gives it an even softer contact, such as stone for woodworking tools.
