A stunning example of a highly pyritised crinoid fossil of the species. From the world-famous Jurassic Coast beach of Charmouth, Dorset UK. The fossil measures 175 mm (6.8 inches) across, which is very large for a crinoid fossil, and contains two large crinoids preserved lying next to one another.
The fossil consists of two animals, with one displaying the stem with attachment cirri and head with a complete crown of arms and pinnules. The second is preserved with a complete crown of arms an pinnules but no stem. It has a thin layer of pyrite on the surface which gives the fossil a wonderful golden colour and shine. The reverse side has been coated in a hard plaster to make it strong and stable. Finding a crinoid fossil from this location as well-preserved as this is very hard nowadays, and these beautiful examples don't come up for sale very often. A rare opportunity to own a very sought after and uncommon fossil from this iconic location. Around 196 million years old (Sinemurian, Early Jurassic), this fossil would make a wonderful addition to any collection. Pyrite is a form of iron which sometimes occurs as a replacement mineral during the fossilisation process, depending on conditions in the sediment at the time in which the process takes place as well as the composition of the creature being preserved. It has the appearance of gold which is why it is commonly known as'fool's gold'. Pyrite ammonites only occur in very specific and limited locations around the world and ones from Charmouth are just about the most famous of the lot. Please take some time to check out my.
