"Big Bertha" is the most famous artillery gun employed during the Great War. Today, few people understand what "Big Bertha" really was; confusing it with a number of long-range artillery pieces that include the German 21cm cannon used to shell Paris and the mobile Austro-Hungarian M11 30.5 cm mortar. In reality, Big Bertha, officially designated the 42cm kurze Marinekanone 14 L/12 M-Gerat, was a massive mobile 42cm (16.5) howitzer purposely built to destroy concrete fortifications.
