This older piece is a large Olla style jar or Pot made by the outstanding artisan Joseph Latome of the San Felipe & Zuni Pueblos here in. These pieces by him are so scarce, much desired, highly collectible, and this one is just. There were not that many good San Felipe Potters around and the newer ones kinda had to figure it out on their own as not much documented pottery from there survived. This amazing piece stands 6.75" tall and is approx 11.5" across at the widest.
It is in perfect condition with no chips cracks repairs or damage, with only a couple tiny spots of finish loss and showing barely any normal signs of wear or scratching due to its older age. May even be what the Estate owners paid for it.
The estate sale people did put a piece of tape across the bottom with a price tag under it, and as you can see in the last photo, did bring a little finish off the bottom of the pot when removed, so it was re-attached. Thankfully its on the bottom. Its still an amazingly rare item, only 2 on line anywhere available including the high-end shops in Santa Fe. One larger piece at 3500.00, and the other, very similar, at 1600.00. Its a sweet piece and a great addition to any collection!Joseph Latoma is a young man who lives at San Felipe Pueblo. His dad is from Zuni Pueblothus the reason for his Zuni namebut his mom is Margaret Chavez of San Felipe Pueblothus his matriarchal link to San Felipe Pueblo. Because there is so little documented historic pottery from San Felipe, Latoma has had to create his designs from memories of the older generation of the pueblo. He is very interested in reintroducing traditional San Felipe pottery.
The only older potter from there in the last 50 years was Candelaria Montana and she passed away about 20 years ago. This large olla was made in the traditional pueblo coil method and slipped with natural regional clay. The designs are a combination of geometric, avian, flora and celestial, all arranged in a most artistic and logical manner.
